Yallourn Coal Mine

On 6 June 2012, a levee bank failure resulted in the flooding of the Yallourn Coal Mine, causing damage to its infrastructure and cutting fuel supply to the adjacent power station.

Millewa Pumping was tasked with diverting the Morwell River to halt further damage.

Millewa Pumping was employed to divert the Morwell River from flowing into the Yallourn Coal mine (caused by the Morwell River breaching its banks due to flooding).

The Yallourn Coal Mine supplies coal to the nearby Yallourn Power Station, which supplies the state of Victoria with up to 22% of its electricity supply.

This project required Millewa Pumping staff to organise and freight a large amount of equipment from Mildura to the mine site - almost 700km away - in a time frame of 7 days.

Objective:
To divert the Morwell River - a perennial river with a flow rate of 4500 litres per second.

Equipment Used:
4 x 26 inch pumps
Large diameter poly pipe

Project Outcomes:
Millewa Pumping successfully diverted the Morwell river, preventing further damage to the Coal Mine and thus ensuring operation of the Yallourn Power Station.

Project Duration:
2 years
Volume Pumped:

50,000ML
